1. Get familiar with your DAW. Knowing how your DAW (digital audio workstation) works is half the battle. Pick up some tutorial videos or books and learn some basics of how to your DAW works. This can also save you a lot of time as you might end up finding out shortcuts of how to do certain processes. Whether you’re using Reason, Ableton, Logic, ProTools or any other DAW of your choice, you will want to have some basic knowledge. After learning some basics, make some short dummy tracks. You can start by making some short 8 bar loops and layering it with some drums, bass, piano and then trick it out with some effects. Play with some stuff. Have fun.

2. Listen and dissect. When starting off with your first track ever, it’s very easy and natural to want to just create from scratch meaning laying down whatever it is you hear in your head. Although this is a recommended way to get your creative flow going once you’re more familiar with the production process, it’s often helpful for beginners to pick a song they like and try and emulate its style. If it’s a song you like a lot, it will most likely already be an influence in what you want to create. If you want to make hip hop, pick a hip hop track; dance music, pick your favorite dance track to emulate etc. Just pick ONE song and listen to it repeatedly until it’s in your subconscious. Pick apart the best you can, what the drums are doing, bassline, instruments, vocals etc.

3. Take some production notes. Dedicate a Word file to your production antics and type in some notes. I still do this after producing for over 7 years. Because there are different paths to the same results, it’s helpful to write things down so you can refer to them. When I look back at my own production notes, I see an evolution in my thought process which comes from practice and experience and I also find that I’ve developed techniques that work much faster than ones I’ve used before. This will also help guide you on your future productions as a sort of template or step by step process of what how YOU like to approach your music.

4. Be patient with yourself. While listening to some of these professional tracks, keep in mind, this is where you want to be someday. However, since this is your very first track, there will be some things you won’t yet be able to figure out. Everything takes practice, even listening. Being able to pick apart EXACTLY what the drums are doing or what the bass is doing also takes practice, especially since there will be many different layers of sound going on at once. Electronic producers may have some frustrations figuring out how certain sounds are made, but don’t worry about this yet. Just do the best you can. Your drums samples don’t need to sound exactly like the ones you hear. This is a learning process and it will take some time but the journey will be fun!

iPhone owners are getting excited about loading their new gizmos with iPhone music downloads. After all, the phone-cum-digital portable media player can store up to 100 songs easily and allow a playtime of up to 24 hours of audio. This article will show you 7 hot tips to find the top service befitting of your new toy when it comes to iPhone music downloads.

1. Free or Paid

Freebie seekers probably would argue with me on this. There is nothing wrong with wanting free iPhone music downloads. Who doesn’t anyway? But the trouble is that free websites that give you music for free are often associated with exposure to viruses, spyware and adware when downloading media files there. Our phones are too new and precious and to risk exposing them to these harmful elements is a No No.

How about downloading each iPhone song for $0.99 or more at online music services like HMV, iTunes and so on? People wouldn’t mind if it is only one or two song. But if we are going to load up at least a 100 songs or soundtracks, this is going to be expensive.

There are now services that offer a lifetime membership for a flat fee of lower than $49.95 to access unlimited iPhone music downloads. These are the real gems!

2. Variety & Size of iPhone Music Library

Music lovers probably have their preferred music. You may not like pop but to another, pop may really sound heavenly. If you love all kinds of music, go with the services that offer multiple genres from Rock, Hip Hop, R&B, Classical to many unheard music genre. Several top sites now offer over 100 million media files including music videos, TV shows and even movies and games.

3. Download Interface

This is a key feature that must not be overlooked. For easy navigation, the interface must be simple to use and does not take long to search and find your music files. One way to get a rough idea is to see how professionally done the site is and to read comments of existing users.

4. Software Applications for Download and Conversion

Several of the more established services are providing free software applications required to download iPhone music as well as movie and video files. They also provide the conversion software needed to convert movies and music file formats into iPhone-compatible formats. The top services also offer you a free DVD conversion software that transfer movies from DVDs to your iPhone.

5. Fast Downloading Speeds

Make sure that the download speeds are fast. Music file sizes are about 3-4 MB per song. Assuming you are downloading 20 songs at a go, the service must not limit your bandwidth usage by slowing down the speed. This is what some poorly run B-grade services do.

6. Safe Download Environment

Some services do not provide good secured environment with a high level of security and safety when you download iPhone music downloads. The last thing you want to worry about is adware, spyware and viruses that could make their way to your computer because the music store refuses to buck up on its system architecture.

7. After-sales Customer Care and Support

Many services just want to make more money. While they promise a 24/7 technical support to entice you to join them, they are hardly around when you need them to help troubleshoot when you face difficulties. Thankfully, there are a few reputable ones who can deliver an excellent level of after-sales service.

Look around and use these tips to find a good service for your iPhone music downloads. Want to know which services score well in every aspect mentioned? Read up my iPhone blog.

Music videos represent a crucial part of the music industry. Artists owe their careers to music videos as they are being given the chance of impressing the public not just with their vocal talent, but also with their looks or moves.

Thirty years ago, music video used to be less important then it is nowadays. MTV (Music Television) was the phenomenon that gave so much power and importance to the music video. MTV started broadcasting in 1981 in the USA and it marked the beginning of the music video’s ruling over the music industry. The first video ever played on MTV was ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ by The Buggles. As MTV was broadcasting 24-hour-a-day music, music videos were needed to be produced. Consequently, music video began to play an important role in artists’ careers. It is considered that even Madonna’s career has been greatly influenced by her videos that presented a sexy, appealing look of the artist. Some experts say that Madonna has been inspired by the image that the actress Greta Garbo has used in her silent movies. MTV has been highly controversial: some saw as the beginning of an amazing, new, fresh era in music, others considered it to mark the end of true musical talent, as artists have been become more appreciated for their looks instead of their vocal abilities.

Nowadays, the music video is as important as the song itself, sometimes even deciding the success of a song or artist. Collections of music videos are being sold on tapes or DVDs. Music video’s greatest fans are apparently watching them muted just to enjoy their artistic value, as they consider it to be a new form of art. They consider that a music video should be assessed based on its visual qualities and not on the song quality. It seems that the music ‘gurus’, corporate managers, have realised the potential of using female sex-appeal in music videos, therefore this feature is being used excessively as it is more popular for the public.

The birth of the music video has created a new type of directors: video directors. MTV started even listing directors with video credits and this profession has become more and more popular. But it seems that most video directors don’t specialise in this particular art form, they see it as being just a step on the way to directing a movie. Many start directing videos or commercials, hoping to get the recognition to build a name and to direct a movie. It seems that even video directors admit the fact that a music video is secondary to the song itself.

In conclusion, although music video’s fans have tried to elevate this form of entertainment to the title of an art form, the music video is eventually just a work of commerce, destined to sell a product: the song.
